Louis Gossett, Jr. (1936 - )

At the age of 17, a leg injury forced Gossett out of basketball, so he took up acting to fill up the time. He got a part in the Broadway production of Take a Giant Step . His work in that play won him the Donaldson Award for being the best newcomer. He then went to NYU on a basketball scholarship.

Louis Gossett, Jr. was drafted the NY Knicks, but decided to continue in his acting career on Broadway. Throughout his career he has specialized in characters who were kind of heart but with tough exteriors. Career highlights include both the film and Broadway productions of A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Iron Eagle (1986), and Toy Soldiers (1991).
