Thomas Mitchell won his Supporting Oscar for playing the whiskey-soaked Doctor who delivers a baby during a stagecoach trip.


Thomas Mitchell (1892 - 1962)

Born of Irish parents in New Jersey. Thomas Mitchell was a character actor whose roles were so diverse that it is hard to imagine one actor could play them all. He worked as a reporter for several yearsand then went went into playwriting before going into acting.

It's interesting to note that in the same year that Thomas Mitchell won for STAGECOACH, he played Gerald O'Hare, Scarlett's father in GONE WITH THE WIND. He was also in: Only Angels Have Wings, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1939.

in 1937 Thomas Mitchell was nominated for his performance in THE HURRICANE.
