In the 1970's, Gene Hackman used his bulk, crinkly smile, and everyman face to become a superstar character actor, and leading man.

His defining role was as tough cop Popeye Doyle in the action crime drama "The French Connection", for which he won the Academy Award. Notable films include: "Bonnie and Clyde," "Superman," "Hoosiers," "The Quick and the Dead," "Unforgiven," and "Enemy Of The State." Gene had an uncredited scene in the classic comedy "Young Frankenstein."

Gene Hackman once referred to his famous, non-handsome face as a "mug with handles."
