Sidney Poitier was a handsome and articulate performer who rose to great fame as the only black superstar of the 1960's. His defining role was as detective Virgil Tibbs in 1967's Best Picture "In the Heat of the Night."

Poitier's popularity opened the door for other black performers.

His notable films include: "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" and "The Defiant Ones." In 1963 Sidney Poitier won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in "Lilies of the Field." Sidney Poitier's recent films include "Sneakers" and "The Jackal."
